The National Defender Investigator Association (NDIA) is the only international organization to represent a constituency dedicated solely to the investigative arm of indigent defense.
The NDIA has maintained its leadership role largely through a dedicated membership and through volunteer efforts. The Board of Directors is comprised of three General Officers and four Area Directors. The General Officers serve a two-year term and are nominated and elected by the entire membership. The Area Directors serve a two-year term and are nominated and elected by the regional membership. General Officers and Area Directors are elected in alternating years. All officers must be full-time Defender investigators. This election process provides the membership with excellent representation and addresses regional interests and concerns as well.
The NDIA has also established itself as one of the premier national training programs in its conduct of its National and Regional training seminars. Some of the foremost authorities in the criminal defense and forensic science fields have taught and lectured for these training vehicles. Many participants have brought this useful information back to their own office’s and shared it with other staff. Many of the information and contacts learned at these seminars have been utilized in the defense of other indigent clients.
The NDIA also has had long established liaisons with the National Legal Aid and Defender Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. The NDIA also maintains close contact and liaisons with a number of other Defender Associations and Defender Investigator Associations across the country and has provided input and leadership toward the establishment of these types of organizations in a number of states.
Many members of the NDIA have taught and lectured for a variety of professional criminal defense organizations across the country as well as a number of colleges and universities. Please review our web site and join us. It will be worth the experience!

Clark County Legal Services Program
Thanks NDIA for Donations
The Clark County Legal Services Program recently sent NDIA Board of Directors member William H. Smith a kind thank you letter for the $1203.00 donation--proceeds from the President's Reception raffle at the 2008 NDIA National Conference in Las Vegas, NV. The money has been added to their building fund due to a lack of space in their current facility.
As a result of the donation, the NDIA has been listed as a supporter of Clark County Legal Services in their 2008 Annual Reporter. They have also invited local NDIA members to attend their 50th Anniversary Celebration this fall.

40th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's Death
With the 40th Anniversary of his death, the National Defender Investigator Association pauses to commemorate the dream, the vision, and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Equality for all is at the very heart of the mission of the NDIA. To memorialize that fact, the NDIA has made a contribution to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee, formerly the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. King was assassinated.
As a result, the museum has placed a brick in its walkway recognizing the NDIA's contribution (see below). The NDIA wishes to thank the museum for this recognition.

Funding of Public Defender System
Varies By State
According to the Louisiana Justice Coalition, the following map shows how each state funds its Public Defender system. It notes that Louisiana is the only state in the nation to attempt to fund the majority of its constitutional obligation to provide indigent defense services through court costs, primarily traffic tickets.

Please report problems to the
.
Trafficking in people for prostitution and forced labor is one of the most prolific areas of international criminal activity and is of significant concern to the United States and the international community. The overwhelming majority of those trafficked are women and children. According to the most recent Department of State estimates, between 600,000 and 800,000 people are trafficked across borders each year. If trafficking within countries is included in the total world figures, official U.S. estimates are that 2 to 4 million people are trafficked annually. However, there are even higher estimates, ranging from 4 to 27 million for total numbers of forced or bonded laborers. As many as 17,500 people are believed to be trafficked to the United States each year. Human trafficking is now considered a leading source of profits for organized crime, together with drugs and weapons, generating billions of dollars. Trafficking in persons affects virtually every country in the world. Traffickers exploit poverty, war, natural or man-made disasters, and ignorance.
